CALL FOR SAMPLES FROM HEALTHY GERIATRIC SHAR-PEI
Drs. Francesca Puppo, Elaine Remmers and Dan Kastner at the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) have asked me to put out another request for
samples. We need the owners of dogs that are 12 years of age or older and
that have NO history of (or even suspicion of) Familial Shar-Pei Fever (FSF)
events or Amyloidosis (i.e. no signs of kidney or liver problems) AND
preferably dogs with no known immediate relatives with signs of either FSF
or Amyloidosis (parents, siblings or offspring) to send 2 ml of EDTA whole
blood to the NIH. As you all well know, the biggest problem is identifying
"normal" so if you have such a Shar-Pei or know of one, PLEASE HELP! This
could be crucial research in identifying the underlying cause of this
autoinflammatory disorder. For statistical reasons, it would be best to
have at least 20 dogs in this part of the study so - if you share your life
with a such a wonderfully fortunate dog - please consider helping Shar-Pei
that are suffering and the future of the whole breed.
For those of you with an understanding of molecular genetics: In order to
identify a novel genetic basis for FSF and clarify the molecular basis of
similar autoinflammatory syndromes in humans, the scientists at the NIH are
going to perform homozygosity mapping and association studies using
high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panels arrayed on
Affymetrix chips.
This is huge project and your help is needed for this to happen. We also
need more Shar-Pei mixed breed dog samples from those with a history
consistent with FSF.
Shipping fees via FedEx will be paid by the NIH but there is no money
available to reimburse you for the blood draw by your veterinarian. Your
cooperation is greatly appreciated. I am very grateful to all of the people
who have so enthusiastically helped by providing samples from their dogs -
these samples are being actively used and analyzed in the on-going research
at the NIH and at Dr. Anne Avery's laboratory at Colorado State University
and progress IS being made.
Please email me at wvc@warwick.net for the medical questionnaire and consent
form which you will send along with the blood sample to the NIH. I will
also provide you with Dr. Kastner's FedEx shipping account number and his
address to which you will ship the sample on ice (please try to avoid
shipping samples over the weekend).
Again, thank you all so very much!
Linda
